Obsessive-compulsive neurosis

A NEUROSIS in which an individual is not only obsessed by certain ideas but feels compelled to act on them often ritually and repetitively, e.g. by counting windows or hand washing. In PSYCHOANALYSIS this BEHAVIOUR is believed to be an effort to relieveGUILT as in the case of Lady Macbeth’s ‘washing’ the blood off her hands.
